TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister (ESDM) Ignasius Jonan said he has not watched the recent viral documentary “Sexy Killers” produced by WatchDoc on the negative effects of Indonesia’s coal mining industry.

One of the aspects discussed in this feature-length documentary is the bleak outcome following mining companies’ departure from an area which eventually creates vast mudholes up to hundreds of hectares causing a hazard for local residents.

“I already issued a regulation and we will not serve those that do not commit to reclaiming the lands. We will not serve the permit of mining companies [not adhering to our rules],” said the minister to journalists at a polling station in Cipete, Jakarta.

The ESDM Minister explained that the entire mining concession holders are required to conserve the environment and conduct reclamation as the Forestry and Environment Ministry mandates.
