TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian and the Malaysian government have agreed to file a letter of objection to the European Union (EU) against the possible ban on the two countries' CPO in Europe.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had signed the letter.

“Yesterday, President Jokowi already signed the joint letter with Prime Minister Mahathir on our disagreement against the European Union’s plans on barring CPO products from Indonesian and Malaysia,” said Luhut at his office in Central Jakarta today.

Earlier reports said the Commission of the European Communities, otherwise known as the European Commission, proposed a new regulation barring the use of biofuel as oil palm cultivation was deemed to have caused rampant deforestation.

CPO is one of Indonesia’s main export commodities, reaching up to 43 million tons of exports throughout 2018.

Luhut, however, stopped short of detailing the points in the letter. “The content is firm about our objection from our viewpoints,” he said.
