3 Possible Cyber Attacks Facing 2019 Indonesia Election

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) said there are three potential cyber attacks threatening the 2019 general election (Pemilu) that must be highly anticipated.
“The cyber threats that would potentially hinder the 2019 Pemilu in Indonesia include hack, leak, and amplify,” said Head of BSSN Djoko Setiadi in his presentation at the 2019 general election’s national coordination meeting in Central Jakarta today, March 27.
He maintains that the threats should not be taken for granted since its effects can impact a vast spectrum.
Hacking, he said, can be mobilized against the election’s cyberinfrastructure ranging from defacing or creating fake websites that are highly relevant to the election. Another threat comes in the form of information leaks via micro-targeting candidates or participants.
“They can either target participants’ private data or constituents of the general election,” Djoko warned.
Meanwhile, amplifying is related to spreading or force-viral personal information of the election candidates which can be abused as a form of black campaign. “Attacking a political opponent by publicizing facts and shortfalls of an opponent,” he said.
