BPS: Trade Deficit Rises to US$1.16bn in January

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced that the trade deficit in January 2019 amounted to US$1.16 billion. The figure is slightly higher than December 2018's US$1.03 billion deficit.
"It is caused by deficits in the oil and gas sector as well as non-oil and gas," BPS chief Suhariyanto said in Jakarta, Friday, February 15
The deficit figure also rose annually compared to January 2018's US$756 million.
In the oil and gas sector, Suhariyanto said, Indonesia only experienced a surplus in gas commodities. For crude oil and oil products, the trade balance is at a deficit.
In January 2019, the value of oil and gas exports was US$1.23 billion, Oil and gas imports value amounted to US$1.68 billion.
Thus, the oil and gas sector experienced a deficit of US$454.8 million. Meanwhile, the non-oil and gas sector recorded a deficit of US$704.7 million as exports fell short at US$12.63 billion compared to the US$13.339 billion imports.
