TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia criminologist Iqrak Sulhin argues that the perpetrator behind the multiple vehicular arson attacks in Central Java is yet to be uncovered because police are still adopting a manual investigation based on CCTV recordings.

“Probably, some CCTV footages could not provide sufficient information,” said Iqrak to Tempo today, Feb. 8.

There have been 28 cases of cars burned randomly across the jurisdiction of the Central Java Police in areas across Semarang City, Semarang District areas, Kendal, and Grobogan.

“The suspect sparked fear among residents of Semarang,” said Grand Commissioner Agus Triatmaja, Central Java Police Chief on Thursday.

Iqrak said that there are a number of elements that leads to the suspect’s motive, but the temporary motive behind the arsons is believed to be out of randomness intentionally to create fear among society. The attackers target random vehicles and the victims were not linked to one another.
