TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said that Indonesia's economic growth in 2018 was the best since 2014. BPS announced that last year, Indonesia's economy grew 5.17 percent.

"This is a good trend. The best since 2014," BPS chief Suhariyanto said in Jakarta, Wednesday, February 6.

In 2014, Indonesia's economy grew 5.01 percent, below 2013's 5.56 percent. In 2015, the growth rate slowed further to 4.88 percent.

"In a time of uncertain global directions and fluctuating commodity prices, this is happy news," Suhariyanto said, hoping the government will issue better policies to support economic growth.

Despite achieving the best growth rate in 4 years, 2018's growth target was not met. The government had pegged a growth target of 5.4 percent in last year's state budget.

Meanwhile, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said he was happy with the economic growth rate. With the achievement, the minister is confident Indonesia can achieve this year's growth target of 5.3 percent.
