TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inspected Friday food prices at the Ngemplak Wholesale Market in Botoran village, Tulungagung regeny, East Java. At the market, the president found the price of broiler chicken was up by Rp1,000.

“[Chicken price] rose from Rp31,000 to Rp32,000 per kilogram,” said Jokowi as quoted from a press release on Friday, January 4. The market inspection was part of the president's agenda in Tulungagung, Trenggalek, and Ponorogo regencies.

According to Jokowi, the increase was prompted by the supply of animal feed. “There is a lack of corn supply to breeders, so it affects chicken prices.”

The president, who was accompanied by Governor Soekarwo, said the government would keep an eye on the chicken price increase as it had a bearing on inflation. The government aims at keeping inflation in the neighborhood of 3.13 percent in 2018 and 3.16 percent in 2017.

Jokowi also checked on rice prices at the market, which was stable, and he said it was partly thanks to the State Logistics Agency’s (Bulog) market operations.
