TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Sumatra’s capital Palembang is expected to be flood-free in 2022 following the city administration’s strategic programs that have been afoot in the past few years.

Palembang Mayor Harnojoyo said among the programs his administration had been working on for the last five years were the provision of water pumps of Bendung River and the restoration of Sekanak River, which is part of the Musi River.

“If we want to eliminate flooding, we must provide pumps, including in Bendung River, Lambidaro River and Buah River,” he said during the consultation of preliminary plans of the midterm regional development plans (RPJMD) of Palembang City for 2018-2023 on Friday, December 14, 2018.

Harno said his administration aimed at kicking off the projects next year and completing them by 2020. However, he underscored that public support was paramount to make the project a success.

“Among them is how the people can refrain from littering, and we also have to beef up our spirits of teamwork,” he said.
