TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Success is the magnet to rewards, such as the large sum bonuses Asian Games athletes received recently. Similar situations can be met at a correctly-managed office that rewards its successful employee.

From the viewpoint of psychologists and the motivation theory, every achievement is worthy of appreciation. As mentioned by Bina Nusantara University psychologist Nanang Suprayogi who stated that a form of appreciation can be an individual’s external motivation to further improve their performance.

“It’s normal for an athlete to be appreciated, especially considering that their achievements are not just for them but also for the country’s namesake. This appreciation is on a higher level,” said Nanang.

Compliments and appreciation a person receives should be a reminder for a person to maintain focus and continue to achieve goals. Society as a whole also bears a role to monitor an athlete’s humbleness and keeping them in check.

“Mental guidance must be given to people. Once a star, athletes must be prepared to be a non-arrogant athlete that does not reduce their personality,” said the psychologist.

Showcasing appreciation must also be presented moderately and give the athletes a time to focus on their training programs. “Unlike a past event where a football athlete was taken to numerous places in the wake of his game in the finals which reduced the time of his resting period and training,” said Nanang.
