TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Traveling to the biggest island in Indonesia, Papua, is a dream and a challenge for travelers. One of the famous tourist attractions is Raja Ampat, the world’s best place for snorkeling and the most destinated place for divers around the globe.

Before visiting Papua, there are several things travelers should know to prepare an unpredictable terrain during the trip. Here is information collected by Tempo:

1. Take Anti-Malaria Medication

Eastern Indonesia, especially Papua, is one of the areas that prone to malaria mosquitoes. To avoid the risk of getting sick from the bites, taking anti-malaria medication is one of the best ways. An anti-mosquito lotion can also be used to prevent the mosquitoes bites.

2. Time Schedule

Papua has wide areas to explore, going from one district to another takes a lot of time especially those who planned to have a road trip. A time scheduled plan is important so there will be no time to waste during the trip.

3. Unpredictable Terrain

A good physical condition and enough ammunition to carry during the trip should be prepared. The road has unpredictable terrain especially those in rural areas. It is better to find information first from the locals about the road terrain that will be crossed.

4. Sea or Mountain

There are two main attractions that should be enjoyed during the trip to Papua; sea attraction and mountain attraction. But if you do not have plenty of time during the trip, one should be chosen between the two.

5. Losing Phone Signal

Be ready to lose mobile network in some parts of Papua. The digital communication network in the region is still inadequate; making it hard to access the internet. Most can only send messages and make calls. You also may find roaming phenomenon in some places during the trip.
