TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara stated to will continue to optimize the work of negative content-scanning system on the internet as one of the efforts to secure the cyberspace from contents related to radicalism and terrorism.

“For a website, we scan such content using crawling engine once in two hours. We have found and took down 1,285 channels,” said Rudiantara in an official statement cited in the ministry official website setkab.go.id on Sunday, May 20.

Rudiantara explained by using the system the ministry team only needs to enter a certain keyword to find a particular website. However, he admitted there is a lot of radicalism and terrorism content circulated in social media despite the work has been developed.

Thus, Rudiantara urged the public to report any negative contents and asked them to be wise in using social media. “It means that do not recklessly share or post negative content because the trace in a digital world will be recorded,” he asserted.

Regarding the matter, Facebook Indonesia claimed to have taken down thousands of radicalism contents related to Surabaya bombings. Facebook Indonesia public policy head Ruben Hattari said as many as 472 contents were taken down as requested by Minister Rudiantara.

“That number is for the two days following the bombing in Surabaya,” said Ruben at the Facebook Indonesia office in Jakarta, on Friday, May 18, refusing to reveal the exact number.

According to Ruben, the content removal was based on the public reports and requests from the government. There were two categories of content that would be removed by Facebook; if the content spread by an account, then it will be blocked and if that a reshare content, we'll mark it as disturbing content.
