TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Maruf Amin said he would not issue a religious blasphemy edict or fatwa (Islamic ruling) to Sukmawati Sukarnoputri related to the contents of her controversy poetry.
“There is no (fatwa), the person has apologized, said she had no intention to do so. Well, so I think it is not necessary," Maruf said at MUI office, Thursday, April 5.
MUI's decision is different from the case of former Jakarta governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok, who is now a convict of the religious blasphemy case.
When Ahok stumbled in the case because of his remarks about a Quranic verse of Al-Maidah:51, MUI issued a religious opinion and stating that Ahok insulted the Quran.

According to Maruf, the decision should not be issued because Sukmawati had admitted her mistake and apologized to the public.
“But if the person is stubborn and loud, MUI will have to issue it. But she apologized," he said.
A poem entitled "Ibu Indonesia" presented by Sukmawati Soekarnoputri at the 29th anniversary of Anne Avantie Berkarya in the Indonesia Fashion Week 2018 became a controversy. It mentions the Islamic sharia, hijab, and adhan. The poem becomes viral on social media and reaps the pros and cons.
A number of people judged that Sukmawati Soekarnoputri should not compare the hijab and hair bun as well as the sound of adhan and song. Some people even prosecute Sukmawati's poetry to the law.
The MUI chairman also accepted Sukmawati’s apology during her visit the MUI office on Thursday, April 5. He said Sukmawati had no intention to offend Islam and asked Muslim community to accept her apology.
Maruf said, if possible, MUI wanted to stop the efforts of the parties who want to bring Sukmawati Sukarnoputri’s poetry to the legal path.
