TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita admitted that beef consumption among Indonesians is still very low.
According to him, until this year beef consumption per capital (person) is only 2.9 kilogram annually.
"This is actually related to the people’s incomes too. Who doesn’t want to eat rending for example? This is because they can’t afford it,” Enggar said in Bekasi, West Java on Friday (28/4).
The minister of the country’s beef consumption this year slightly increased by 0.6 percent compared to that in 2016.
However, in comparison to beef consumption in the neighboring countries, Enggar said, beef consumption in Indonesia is still left behind.
Beef consumption per capita in Singapore for example, reaches 55 kilograms per year while in the Philippines, it reaches 7 kg per year.
The minister believes that Indonesia’s beef consumption will increase if the country’s per capita income improve.
