TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 37 Indonesian migrant workers from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) had died before being sent home.
Two Indonesian migrant workers have also died recently in Hong Kong and Malaysia. “In total, there were 37 Indonesian migrant workers [TKI] who died abroad,” said John Salukh, head of Migrant Workers Preparation, the Migrant Worker Placement and Protection Agency (BNP2TKI), on Monday, October 24, 2016.
Of the 37 Indonesian migrant workers, 36 worked in Malaysia and one worked in Hong Kong, John said. Most of them were illegal workers who departed from NTT. “Only four of them were legal workers, but their documentations were forged, making them illegal,” he said.
According to John, the 37 Indonesian workers had been sent home. Many others were not as fortunate and buried in Malaysia. “Some migrant workers had to be buried in Malaysia as they had no specified address.”
