TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.1 SR tectonic earthquake shook the Southwest of Maluku District, Maluku Province, on Friday, September 30, 2016, 06:49 a.m. local time.
The data gathered from Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Ambon shows that the epicenter of the earthquake happened in 6.35 South Latitude and 128.10 East Longitude at the depth of 348 Kilometers below sea levels.
The location of the earthquake is at 248 Kilometers Northeast of Southwest Maluku District, Maluku Province, and does not have tsunami potential. The earthquake did not cause panic for the local people that geographically is along the border of the neighboring country, Timor Leste, because the shock wasn’t felt.
The Maluku Province is one of the regions that is prone to earthquakes and tsunami because it is located at the meeting point of three major continental plates, which is the Pacific, Indo-Australian, and Eurasian. The Indo-Australian plate goes underneath the Eurasian plate and meets the Pacific plate, which causes irregular fractures.
