TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Attorney General (AG) Muhammad Prasetyo can yet to confirm when will the execution of the death row convict Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso take place. The execution had been postponed due to the Philippines' request to reveal a trafficking case that involved Mary.
“Yes, we’re still waiting. When the president (Rodrigo Duterter) came here, (we) had the opportunity to ask,” Prasetyo said on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.
The AG emphasized that the Indonesian government is not allowing Mary to go to Philippines to complete the court process. He said the Philippines' authority must come to Indonesia if they need Mary Jane’s testimony on the trafficking case for the trial.
“She (Mary) can’t be taken anywhere. If they want to get a testimony, they (attorney from the Philippines) can come here and we can assist them; or through a teleconference,” Prasetyo said.
When asked about the possibility of the execution once Mary’s trial in the Philippines has ended, Prasetyo chose not to comment. “We’ll see that later, we just hope (the trial) will be ended soon.”
The Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly said the trial should have ended quickly. Because Indonesia and the Philippines already have a mutual legal assistance.
Laoly said that Mary is not permitted to go back home. “We’re not allowing it. We asked them to take her written testimony under an oath here (in Indonesia),” Laoly said on September 13.
Mary, who is sentenced to death at the Sleman District Court in October 2010, once had her name on the second and the third wave of death row convicts list. However, her execution was postponed twice.
