TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kemang, South Jakarta, has been inundated after heavy rain pounded on the area on Sunday night, September 25. It was the second of its kind in the past month after the same occurred on August 29.
Jakarta Water Management Department head Teguh Hendrawan said his office is currently collecting the data of issues faced by the administration in Kemang, together with South Jakarta Mayor.
“We have not taken any action, we have only carried out dredging of river,” Teguh told Tempo on Sunday, September 25, 2016.
Teguh explained that Kemang has a poor water management system. From poor drainage system, which is blocked by pedestrian walkway and pavement, to narrow river channel of only 3 meter wide. “The Governor said it must be 20 meters [wide].”
He also said the administration will not hesitate to evict anyone who obstruct the flow of the river in Kemang. Teguh added the he will hold a press conference in the near future. “I will hold a press conference on 29 [Sept], it will all be clear by then.”
Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok plans to widen Krukut River by evicting structures in Kemang to stop recurring floods in the area. However, land owners in the area are not yet willing to sell their land.
