Universitas Brawijaya Students Recycle Used Cooking Oil

TEMPO.CO, Malang - A team of students from Universitas Brawijaya have successfully recycled used cooking oil into reusable cooking oil. The team, which consists of mechanical engineering students Indra Barani and Gara Putra, and chemical engineering students Sofia Afifah A., Yuyun Drupadi A.A, Mohammaf Rizal Fauzi, and Neila Nabilah, have created a device called the Zuvier Purify Oil Filter to filter used cooking oil.

Under the supervision of one of the lecturers from the University’s engineering  faculty Bambang Poerwadi, the students researched and created the device that can turn used cooking oil into consumable cooking oil.

"[The research] was divided into two stages, based on [the students'] competence," said Sofia, who acts as the team's coordinator on Sunday, September 11, 2016. The chemical engineering students researched the composition and feasibility of the used cooking oil while the mechanical engineering students designed and programmed the device.

Based on tests at the University's Agriculture Faculty laboratory, the recycled oil matches the Indonesian National Standard quality.

The team's innovation received a gold medal in the 3rd International Young Inventors Award (IYIA) held by the Indonesian Invention and Innovation Promotion Association (INNOPA) in Surabaya.

The IYIA was attended by 100 teams from other countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Romania, Russia, Croatia, United States and Canada
