TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Jakarta District Court on Thursday (11/8) ruled in favor of the lawsuit filed by the Environment and Forestry Ministry against PT National Sago Prima (NSP) in the forest fire case in Riau.
The company has been declared guilty and has to pay a fine of around Rp 1,040 trillion.
"Just like what the Environment and Forestry Minister says, this is the people’s victory,” said Director General of Natural Resources Conservation of the Ministry Tachrir Fathoni in Jakarta, on Sunday (14/8).
According to Tachir, last year’s forest fires brought misery to the people as many of them suffered from suffocation, transportation system was disrupted and people’s daily activities were also disrupted
Tachir was also grateful that the court responded positively to the lawsuit filed by his ministry.
"So this is not our ministry’s victory but the victory of the people in Riau in particular and people in Indonesia in general,” he added.
Speaking separately, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya said besides the case with PT NSP, the court also ruled in favor of other lawsuits filed by the ministry.
Some cases are still under way, she added.
The Minister added that companies that are proven to have burned land can be subject to sanctions in the form of the suspension of permits and other administrative sanctions.
"We’re still preparing around 6 – 7 other cases,” Siti said in Jakarta on Friday (12/8).
