TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - CEO of BOSF Foundation, Jamartin Sihite, concerned about the illegal smuggling of 17 orangutans from Borneo to West Java through airport which was luckily found out by the authority. He said that airport should be clear and sterilized from such activity.
Jamartin added that orangutan is considered as a large animal, thus smuggling through airport should be easily detected.
"It showed that we have a serious issue in monitoring" he said on February 10.
Ten of the smuggled primates are now kept in Indonesian Safari Park, Bogor. The other have been returned to Borneo and Sumatra.
Head of BKSDA of Central Borneo, Nandang Prihadi, claimed that airport is one of the main exit in cases of smuggling. He also complained that his personnel do not have sufficient access in the airport to prevent smuggling.
