TEMPO.CO, Freetown - The World Health Organization (WHO) denied Sierra Leone's request to evacuate a sick doctor to Germany on Saturday, September 13, 2014. Although WHO denied the request, spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic promised that Dr. Olivet Buck, a Sierra Leone citizen, will be taken care of in his hometown.
"This includes giving access to the Zmapp drug," said Jasarevic to reporters.
Buck was the fourth doctor to have been infected by the deadly virus in Sierra Leone. The three previous doctors infected by the virus died shortly after. In an attempt to save Buck's life, Sierra Leone requested the assistance of a hospital in Hamburg, Germany, which agreed to treat the doctor.
If WHO had funded the evacuation, Buck would have been the first doctor from the Ebola infected country to be treated abroad. The outbreak has spread throughout West Africa killing more than 2,400 people. Medical personnel are the most vulnerable to infection as 144 medical personnel have died since the outbreak a few months back.
