A Desert in Tropical Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A desert is probably the least you’d expect to see when visiting Indonesia.

With a relatively high rainfall, Gumuk Pasir (desert) in Parangkusumo, Bantul, Yogyakarta, is rather unique.

It is located not far from the Parangtritis and Depok beaches, about 30 kilometers from downtown Yogyakarta.

The desert was formed by the volcanic materials of Mount Merapi. Rocks and sand from the eruption were carried away by the Progo River into the southern sea of Java. The strong currents eroded the volcanic material into grain and carried it to the mainland, forming sand dunes.

The wind blows the sand further from the sea, where it gathers in Parangkusumo, which has a flat contour but is surrounded by hills.

This unique natural phenomenon has not only drawn tourists, but also scientists who have made Gumuk Pasir a natural laboratory for geological research.

Entering the desert, you will see the mounds of sand from the main road. Cypress trees on the outskirts of Gumuk Pasir are the last shade available before entering the hot, arid area.

Gumuk Pasir is covered by sand dunes. The sand is grey and very soft with a relatively strong wind, forming a wavy pattern on the dune surface.

Natural paintings created by the wind add to the beauty of Gumuk Pasir, especially in the morning and evening when the sand reflects the golden sun.

The place has become a favorite natural studio for amateur and professional photographers.

Many photographers use the site for fashion shoots, pre weddings and advertising photography. It is also a popular site for movies and video clips.

Around the area, there are many photography and film equipment rental outlets. They rent a variety of equipment such as costumes, horses, goats, old bicycles, motorcycles, furniture and other unique things.

Accommodation is widely available on Parangtritis Beach.

For those in search of food, Depok Beach, located to the west of Gumuk Pasir, is a haven for seafood lovers.
