TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X waved off to 200 ox-drawn carriages and participants in the opening of Ox-drawn Carriage Festival at Maguwoharjo Stadium, Sleman, Yogyakarta on Sunday.
As many as 200 ox-drawn carriages were decorated and stuffed with crops like rice, cassava, corn, and vegetables. One of the carriages also carried six foreign tourists along the carnival route.
“I am so impressed and enthusiastic to preserve the tradition of ox-drawn carriages,” said the Sultan.
The 2014 Ox-drawn Festival was held by Karang Taruna (the local youth community) Malangrejo, Yogyakarta.
“We are determined to make the Ox-drawn Carriage Festival a flagship event in Yogyakarta. We want the ox-drawn carriages to become one of the icons of Yogya,” said the Chairman of the Festival Organizer Bowo Harso Nugroho.
