TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The life of street musicians in Jakarta has been adapted into a documentary film entitled "Jalanan" (The Street Life) by Daniel Ziv, the movie director. In the making, Daniel had followed and documented the life story of the three main characters: Boni, Titi, and Ho Ke, for five years.
"This is a personal story that is very interesting and worth telling. The story is not only about the phenomena of the street musicians but also the portrait of Indonesia after the reformation era (1998)," Daniel explained on April 8.
Daniel's experience as a reporter in Jakarta has become great assets in the film-making. According to Daniel, who is also an editor of monthly magazine Djakarta, the life story of the street musicians has been giving a particular interest because it can be presented through musical performance.
To find the suitable character for his film, Daniel said that he had to cast a 'secret' audition by spending his time on public buses. "I feel that they have a strong character that they could jump out of the big screen and interact with the audiences," Daniel stated.
Daniel's effort and patience have resulted in sweetness as his film won the Best Documentary category at the Busan International Festival.
