Rare Dragonfly Species Found in Banyuwangi

TEMPO.CO, Banyuwangi - The Indonesia Dragonfly Society (IDS) and the Banyuwangi Photographer Club have managed to identify 54 species of dragonfly in Banyuwangi, East Java, some of which are extremely rare in population. IDS researcher Tabita Makitan, stated that the 54 species were identified after they spend two years exploring the field.

"We will publish this discovery in a book," said Tabita.

One of the rare species is the Drepanosticta sundana. which was found in Kalibendo and Kalongan. Other rare species is the Leptogomphus Sp., whihc was found in Anyar Village and Kalongan. The IDS also found five species of Amphiaeschna Sp.

Tabita mentioned that the three dragonfly species can only live in decent vegetation, thus showing that forest and river in Banyuwangi are well-preserved.

The Head of IDS Wahyu Sigit, added that they have so far identified 75 species of dragonfly in Java Island, out of the total 172 species recognized in the island.
