TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of National Commission on Violence against Women, Yunianti Chuzaifah, said the Jakarta Government still has not done enough to make women feel safe, especially for public transport users. She viewed that public transport facilities, such as trains and Transjakarta buses, are fairly good. "But, after they got off, they still have to walk pass residential areas or alleys," she said at the Jakarta City Hall, yesterday.
Although she viewed that Government's efforts are still lacking, she appreciated the 119 call center service that was launched yesterday for reports of sexual violence against women, along with its website www.kekerasanseksual.komnasperempuan.com. This is the first time the National Commission collaborated with Jakarta Government. The new service is expected to accommodate victims of sexual violence who are ashamed to report. "The number of reports from the public can make the government realize that their area is yet to be safe," she explained.
According to the National Commission on Women's data, there were 1,696 cases of violence in Jakarta in 2012, and 211,822 cases on national level. For the figures, 4,336 cases were linked to sexual violence, which most often happened in public. The recorded types of violence were lewd behavior and rape, followed by rape attempt, sexual harassment and human trafficking.
