5.3M Earthquake Hits Garut, Sukabumi This Morning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG reported a tectonic earthquake with an updated parameter of 5.3-magnitude hitting the southern part of Garut and Tasikmalaya in West Java on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, at around 05:43 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
The epicenter is located at 8.18 degrees Southern Latitude and 107.79 degrees Longitude East, or 94 kilometers away southwest of Pangandaran Regency at 41-kilometer depth.
"Considering the epicenter and the hypocenter, it was a shallow intraplate earthquake," said the head of the earthquake and tsunami center r at BMKG on Thursday. "The [BMKG] analysis result found that the earthquake had an oblique-thrusting fault movement."
The earthquake was felt at the scale of IV MMI in Garut. Meaning, the vibration was felt by many people inside the house.
In Cilacap, Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi, Cianjur, and Pangandaran, the earthquake was felt at III MMI on the intensity scale while it was felt at the scale of II-III MMI in Bandung and Bogor.
BMKG recorded one aftershock up until 06:15 a.m. WIB. The earthquake did not cause any tsunami potential.
