TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency BMKG have detected six aftershocks after the 6.6-magnitude earthquake (updated magnitude from the initial reports of 6.3 magnitudes) occurred this morning, November 2, 2023, at 05:04 WITA (Central Indonesia Time) in Kupang, NTT.
"There have been six aftershocks. but they were not obvious," said the Head of Kupang Geophysics Station Marhiono as quoted by Antara today, Thursday, November 2, 2023.
According to Margiono, the first aftershock reportedly happened at 05:28 WIT with 3.1 magnitude. The center of this earthquake was 9.99 Southern Latitude and 123.69 Longitude West, around 21 kilometers northwest of Kupang Regency, at 21-kilometer depth.
The second aftershock was 3.3 magnitude and occurred at 06:03 WITA, located 31 kilometers away southwest of Kupang Regency at 10.18 Southern Latitude and 123.67 Longitude West at 10-kilometer depth.
The third aftershock occurred at the same place as the previous aftershock, but with a weaker magnitude of 2.7 at 06:51 WITA The earthquake was located at a 17-kilometer depth.
According to BMKG, the fourth aftershock was recorded at 06:12 WITA with 3.2 magnitude. The aftershock was located at 10.09 Southern Latitude and 123.81 Longitude West, around 13 kilometers southwest of Kupang Regency at a 20-kilometer depth.
The fifth aftershock was recorded at 07:22 WITA with 2.2 magnitude. The aftershock was located at 10.21 Southern Latitude and 123.67 Longitude West, around 34 kilometers southwest of Kupang Regency at an 8-kilometer depth.
The sixth aftershock was 2.6 magnitude and occurred at 07:21 WITA, located 33 kilometers away southwest of Kupang Regency at 10.18 Southern Latitude and 123.65 Longitude West at 4-kilometer depth.
The initial earthquake this morning was felt by people in Kupang, Selatan Timor Tengah, Rote, Waingapu, Alor, Larantuka, and Lembata. It was also reportedly causing slight damage to buildings.
