TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake with 6.3 magnitude hit Kupang, NTT on Thursday morning, November 2, 2023, at 04:04 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
From the pictures sent by BMKG, it was shown that Kupang's Regency Office was damaged, and the ceiling upstairs was falling. Meanwhile, the Governor's Office of NTT also experienced light damage. "This earthquake was destructive," Daryono, the Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center in the BMKG said.
The epicenter of this earthquake was located at 10.26° Southern Latitude and 123.72° Longitude West, or 15-kilometer northeast of Kupang, NTT, at a 25-kilometer depth.
"Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of its hypocenter, the earthquake was a shallow crustal earthquake triggered by active fault activity, with normal fault movement," Daryono said.
The quake was felt in Kupang on an intensity scale of V MMI, meaning the quake was experienced by almost all residents and woke up the majority of them. Meanwhile, in South Timor Tengah Regency, the quake was felt on an intensity scale of IV-V MMI.
A smaller scale was felt in Rote and Waingapu, with an intensity scale of III MMI, equivalent to trucks passing by while inside the house. Meanwhile, in Alor, the earthquake was felt at an II MMI intensity.
BMKG reported no aftershocks at present, with no potential for a tsunami. BMKG also urged the impacted residents to remain vigilant, stay calm, and avoid damaged buildings.
