TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The controversy forming around the Shopee commercial featuring K-Pop band BLACKPINK upon commemorating the online marketplace’s “Shopee Road to 12.12 Birthday Sale” has entered a new stage when the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) officially sent out warning letters to 11 television stations.
KPI central’s broadcasting commissioner Hardly Stefano said that the commercial can potentially go against the country’s decency norm adopted by the general population.
The warning letter, signed by KPI chairman Yuliandre Darwis on Tuesday, sent out warnings to Trans TV, RCTI, RTV, MNC TV, Indosiar, TV One, ANTV, Trans7, GTV, Net, and SCTV.
According to Hardly, KPI hopes that the Shopee commercial would be soon dropped and replaced by any commercial that will not potentially be perceived negatively. “KPI will issue sanctions based on existing regulations if the commission finds that the commercial is still broadcasted,” said Hardly.
The commercial that featured BLACKPINK personnel was previously protested by Maimon Herawati, a Journalism Lecturer of the Padjajaran University in Bandung, who created an online petition urging for the commercial to be taken down for its indecency.
