TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia`s office head in Jakarta, Trisno Nugroho, said the capital city made a significant contribution to the national economy.

“Jakarta is the backbone of Indonesia`s economy, contributing at 17 percent. If the economic growth of Jakarta is slow, Indonesia’s will be slow as well,” said Trisno in the Investment and Business Forum in Westin Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday, Oct 23.

He explained the capital city’s economic growth tend to fluctuate throughout the year. In the first quarter of 2018, the rate was recorded at 5.97 percent and slightly slip to 5.93 percent in the second quarter.

The figure was far below the economic growth in 2017 at 6.22 percent. Referring to the data, he hoped the growth would increase to above 6 percent.

“Hopefully, the third quarter of 2018 will be closed by more than 6 percent because the trend is commonly down in the fourth quarter,” said the BI Jakarta head.

Trisno recalled the success of Jakarta as the host of international events namely Asian Games and Asian Para Games. According to him, such events could lift up the city’s economy.

Aside from that, he delivered appreciation to the Jakarta Inflation Control Team (TPID) for its work in maintaining the prices in the market.

“The inflation rate in Jakarta is really good, and that becomes a role model. Jakarta has contributed [to the country’s economic growth] at 20 percent. If it can be maintained, the national inflation will drop,” the head of Bank Indonesia's Jakarta office concluded.
