TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - WhatsApp claims to be the only messaging application used during emergency, including in times of disaster.


Based on a written statement on Friday, October 5, WhatsApp is used by private institutions and government agencies to coordinate in times of disaster.


1. Aksi Cepat Tanggap (Quick Response Act) or ACT, a social and humanitarian foundation, uses WhatsApp as a medium to provide information to donors regarding the latest information and to coordinate fundraising for earthquake and tsunami victims.


2. Three days after the earthquake and tsunami in Palu, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has raised funds from the people of Aceh, who fell victim to the 2004 tsunami through WhatsApp and other social media platforms. The donation came from local officials, businessmen and residents.

3. Palu and Donggala residents are also helping earthquake and tsunami victims through Facebook and WhatsApp. Both individually and in groups, they try to help the victims through the use of technology.


4. The President's communication team created a WhatsApp group specifically to deal with the earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi. The group comprises a number of government officials, including the the Armed Forces (TNI) Commander and the National Police Chief.
