TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amirah, a 1.5-year-old elephant calf that survived a trap, died after being treated at the Saree elephant training center (PLG), Aceh Besar, on Monday, September 24, according to Aceh’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) head Sapto Aji Prabowo.
Amirah was rescued in the area of Geumpang, Pidie regency on May 3, 2018.
“However, Amirah did not die of the injuries she sustained from the trap. They were already completely healed. She suspectedly died of heart and kidney failures,” said Sapto Aji.

Just one month ago, a joint team of doctors from the Aceh BKSDA and Syiah Kuala University Medical Faculty treated the elephant by taking blood tests that showed the elephant’s heart and kidney were not performing normally.
A week before Amirah’s passing, the baby elephant sustained complications that peaked on Sunday afternoon, causing Amirah unable to stand on her own. Following 12 hours of intensive care, Amirah died and was buried in the vicinity of the PLG Saree where she spent her days in the past four months.
