TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The submission of new patents or intellectual rights have been dominated by foreign companies. Out of 14,000 submissions in 2017, only 15 percent are from domestic origins.
“Prior to this, there were only 10 percent local submissions,” said Dede Mia Yusanti, Director of Patents at the Directorate General of Intellectual Rights in Bandung Yesterday.
According to Dede, foreign companies that listed their patents in Indonesia have various product line up such as medicines and cellular phones.
“Whenever they sell their products here, the patents must be protected,” she said at the ITB-CEO Net & Entrepreneurship Festival event on Tuesday.
Compared to patents, Indonesian local products tend to enlist their brand which accumulates to 300 brands each day, considering that it is easier to do so compared to patents. “Patents must be compared to similar products that exist globally,” said Dede.
She also explained that an International patent does not exist; “Intellectual rights are only protected at places where they are listed,” she said. Dede argues that the lack of domestic products and innovations that listed for a patent originates from peoples’ obliviousness of patents.
