TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) is committed to help the government develop electric-powered cars, especially in realizing the general electricity supply stations (SPLU).

“BPPT is prepared to support the technological aspect of electric cars. But commercializing it needs further studies on commercialization, technological maturity, regulation, and infrastructure availability,” said Head of BPPT Unggul Priyanto in a written statement Tempo received on Tuesday, July 31.

The development of electric cars is President Jokowi’s national program that is hoped to drive Indonesia upon becoming a player in the industry, rather than just merely becoming a spectator.

“Synergy between multiple stakeholders is needed to achieve that goal. We also need a regulation that can push Indonesia’s automotive industry to invest in electric cars such as offering incentives,” said Unggul.

Furthermore, BPPT is fully prepared to develop and conduct studies regarding electric motors, batteries, and component manufacturing that involve domestic industries.

The agency has produced several electric-powered transportation prototypes such as motors, trolley bus, and an entire car.
