Indonesia Wins 4 Silver Medals at Int`l Biological Olympiad

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Biology Olympiad Team won four silver medals in the 29th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) competition held in Iran. Four high school students representing Indonesia compete with 265 students from 68 IBO participating countries in 2018.
“These four silver medals are remarkable achievements. Our children have struggled, giving their best,” said Director of High School Development, Purwadi Sutanto, when picking up the IBO delegation at Soekarno Hatta airport, Cengkareng, Monday, July 23.
The four students who made the Indonesian’s name in the international event are Aditya David Wirawan (Christian 1 Petra High School, Surabaya), Samuel Kevin Pasaribu (Unggul Del High School, North Sumatra), Silingga Metta Jauhari (SMAN 8 Jakarta), and Syailendra Karuna Sugito (Semesta BBS High School, Semarang).
They were accompanied by Agus Dana Permana and Ahmad Faizal, the lecturer at the School of Life Sciences and Technology Bandung Institute of Technology. Then, Ida Bagus Made Artadana, (lecturer of the University of Surabaya), Ihsan Tria Pramanda, (Teacher Staff of Biology Indonesia Olympiad Team), and Muamar Surawidarto, (Directorate of High School Development, Ministry of Education and Culture.
On the first day, Indonesian students worked on the four practice topics for 90 minutes each. The four topics were Plant Biology (plant physiology and adaptation), Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (protein isolation), Animal Biology (leech anatomy and mite observation) and Ecology and Evolution of Microbes. On the second day, the students worked on two sets of computer theory problems with a total of six hours’ work time. All tests were conducted at the Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran.
