TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The price of chicken eggs in several traditional markets in Jakarta reached Rp30,000 per kilogram on Tuesday, July 10.

“After Eid al-Fitr, the price [of chicken eggs] keep rising. Now it’s Rp30,000 per kilogram,” said Rizal, a seller of staple food at Palmerah Market, Jakarta.

Rizal explained the price of chicken eggs after Eid was Rp24,000 per kilogram and gradually increased to Rp26,000 and now at Rp30,000 per kilogram. Several sellers at Palmerah even set the price at Rp32,000 per kilogram.

Rizal considered the increase was due to the decline Rupiah over US Dollar. “I think there is no sign the price of chicken eggs will decrease,” he added.

Another seller named Rian also admitted the increased price of chicken eggs during the past week and that affected his income.

Rian mentioned he usually sold two boxes of chicken eggs or approximately 30 kilograms of eggs in a day. “Now since the price rises it’s difficult to even sell one box in a day,” he said.
