TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The tradition of an offering and thanksgiving to the earth or God dubbed Sedekah Bumi was held along with Sedekah Laut, an offering to the sea at Bendar village, Juwana, Pati regency, Central Java.

In this creative festival on Sunday, July 1, the community presented various attractions including unique costumes resembling wings of birds, peacock dress, traditional puppet (wayang) character, and also Papua traditional clothes.

Thousands of visitors crowded the festival even though it established in the streets of the village. “All of this is the community’s creation, especially those in vocational high school majoring fashion,” said Jamari, as the organizing committee head of Sedekah Bumi dan Laut Bendari Village.

For this annual tradition, Jamari added, the community could design their own costumes as they wish. In addition, they also prepared Larung Sesaji, an offering consisted of a goat head, banana, green coconut, and flowers. Every residence also provided foods and drinks for the visitors. "This aims as a form of alms for local residents, as well as to connect the relationship," said Jamari.
