TEMPO.CO, Sleman - Yogyakarta Special Region Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X confirmed the slopes of Mount Merapi volcano tour route will not get reforestation effort. It is the slopes of Merapi in Sleman region affected by the eruption in 2010.


"The area is currently a favorite tourist attraction in Sleman Regency and provides economic benefits as well as improving the welfare of local communities," said Sultan on Syawalan at the Sleman Regent's Office, in Sleman, Tuesday, June 26.


According to the Sultan, many tourists outside of the region who want to see the area that was devastated and hit by the hot clouds of Merapi.


"Therefore the area is left as it was hit by hot clouds of Merapi because it has become a magnet for tourists," he said.


Sultan said many local people who provide tourist services in the affected area, among others, by renting a jeep car and accompany tourists to see the affected areas.


It is realized that because no reforestation is done, there are environmental consequences to be faced.


"It also has to find a solution," Sultan said. With no reforestation then the water conserves are also disrupted, the springs on the slopes of Merapi can dry up.


In addition, without large trees, if there is an eruption of Mount Merapi, glide of hot clouds could not be blocked. The glide will hit to the bottom.
