TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The currently jailed former Jakarta Governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok, expressed his support for the East Java deputy governor candidate Puti Guntur Soekarno in a written letter dated February 13, 2018, from the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) detention center in Depok.

“Yes, it’s an actual letter from Pak Ahok,” confirmed Ahok’s younger sister and lawyer, Fifi Lety today on June 26.

Puti Guntur is currently running for the East Java Gubernatorial election and is paired with Saifullah Yusuf, notably known as Gus Ipul as her Deputy Governor candidate. Both are backed by four parties; namely the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Gerindra Party, and the National Awakening Party (PKB).

In the past, PDIP had supported Ahok-Djarot Saiful Hidayat at the 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election together with Golkar Party, NasDem, Hanura, and PPP. Ahok lost the election to the now Jakarta Governor and Deputy Governor Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno.

Not long after the results of the election came out, Ahok was found guilty of blasphemy and was sentenced to a two-year imprisonment at the Brimob detention center.
