International Women`s Day: 5 Inspirational Women Scholars

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - International Women`s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 annually. The world commemorates women achievement in politics, social, or science fields. The celebration was started in 1900.


In the science field, 5 women scholars achieved the success in their own studies. They are:


1. Cori Bargmann


Cori Bargmann is a neurobiologist expert at Rockefeller University who was born on January 1, 1961. She got her graduate, master, and a Ph.D. degree in University of Georgia and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


Bargman is renowned for her work on the genetic and neural circuit mechanisms of behavior. She has received various prestige awards in science, including Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and Franklin Institute Awards.


2. Sara Seager


Her name is widely acknowledged among astronomy enthusiasts. Born on July 21, 1971, Seager is an astrophysicist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her research focuses on exoplanets, a planet outside the solar system that orbits a star.


Her purpose is to find habitable planets and reveal another presence of life in the galaxy.


3. Katie Hunt


Hunt is an archaeologist in palaeopathology who studies ancient disease in human life. She and her team unlock cancer's ancient origins since 8,000 years ago.


Her noble mission is to build a data bank of cancer that can be accessed for free for other scientist or public as to find together the cure of this deadly disease. Hunt is a cancer survivor.


4. Emily Levesque


Young and indigenous. Those words perfectly describe Emily Levesque, an astronomer at the University of Washington. She is a 32-year-old woman who created numerous mayor research, including massive stars. During her college, Levesque had discovered many biggest stars in the galaxy.


5. Maryam Mirzakhani


She is the first Iranian mathematician who is honored with Fields Medal in 2014. The award is equal to the noble award for the mathematicians.


Mirzakhani is born on May 3, 1977, and raised in Iran before went to Harvard University. She is known as hyperbolic geometry expert. Unfortunately, she died on July 15, 2017, after fighting against her breast cancer for years which spread to her bones and liver.
