TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the government plans to allow foreign universities to open an establishment in Indonesia. He argues that it can efficiently control the education budget.

According to Jusuf Kalla, the government has spent trillions for scholarships abroad, with one of it being the Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP). “Why are we granting expensive scholarships [for students] to attend school abroad? We funded trillions for the LPDP,” said Kalla at the Education and Culture Ministry’s Training Center (Pusdiklat) on Wednesday, February 7.

He suggested that allowing foreign universities improve the efficiency of the scholarship grant. “We will bring the school here, so many more students can enjoy it,” said Jusuf Kalla.

The vice president also hopes that it can also provide a comparison for the domestic education system. Jusuf Kalla also said that lecturers and professors will reap the benefits from this move.

The plan on permitting foreign universities to open an establishment domestically was first introduced by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). His intention is to provide a quality comparison for Indonesia’s domestic educational system.
