TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian State Official responded to an advertisement at the island trading site privateislandsonline.com that advertised the sale of Ajap Island in Bintan, Riau Islands.
According to Arif Havas Oegroseno, Maritime Sovereignty Coordination Deputy at the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, the Indonesian island that is being sold for Rp44 billion in the website is, in fact, an illegal activity and that the island sales cannot be done.
“The thing that can be sold is the land plot on the surface of the island,” said Havas on Wednesday, January 17.
Havas continued to explain that selling land plots on an island is regulated under the Government Regulation No 62/2010 on the use of outer smaller islands. Havas said that the rule regulates the maximum width of land that can be sold.
“The rule says that lands sold must not exceed 70 percent of the island’s composition,” said Havas. Meanwhile, the other 30 percent must be used for the public’s interest.
Other than that, the purchaser of the majority part of the island’s land is not allowed to control the seabed in the vicinity of the beach.
A different response was given by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan who did not say much when he was asked about this island trading matter. “I will check it first, but I’m not aware of it,” said Luhut in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 17.
