TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Maluku`s Ternate offers processed spices as one of the best souvenirs. The processed spices to be taken home are nutmeg syrup, nutmeg sweets, clove oil, and spice coffee.

The production of processed spices combines modern technology and local wisdom. Ternate Industry and Trade Agency head Nuriyadin A. Rahman personally guarantees the quality and safety of the products.

Nuriyadin said the processed spices are certified by related institutions, such as the Health Agency, the Food and Drugs Administration (BPOM), and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

In addition to their delicacy, the processed spices can be used as herbal medicines as practiced by the people in Ternate for a long time.

The nutmeg syrup, for instance, can ease colds, insomnia, gastric acid, hoarse, and others. Local resident Abdul Latif said that his insomnia was gone after consuming nutmeg syrup regularly for three months.

Processed spices can be easily found at souvenir stores, such as Taranoate convenience store. The store only sells and markets products made by small and medium industries.

A tourist from Jakarta, Sugiyanto, said he always buys nutmeg syrup and spice coffee as souvenirs. “They’re delicious and good for health,” he said.
