TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the word pribumi (native Indonesians) spoken by the new Governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan in his speech was used in the context of telling history. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with the use of the term.

"We have to see the context, his speech was about colonialism, in colonial times," Kalla said at his office in Jakarta, Tuesday, October 17. "Do not just cut one word, but see in what context the word is used," he said.

Kalla said Anies used the term pribumi in his speech when he spoke of the colonial period's history, in which native Indonesians had to rise, which the vice president deemed acceptable. It would be another story if Anies used the word to differentiate a certain group of people.

"He was speaking in historical context, not discriminatory context," Kalla said.

Anies' first speech delivered Monday night, October 16. His use of the word pribumi sparked online protests for the term's racist nature. The Jakarta Governor had given an explanation about his speech and said that the term he used in the speech referred to the colonial era.
