TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Car sales dropped 27.03 percent on a year-on-year basis to 66,755 vehicles in June, the Indonesia Automobile Industry Association (Gaikindo) said today.
All in all, the sales in the first half of this year totaled 534,288 vehicles, increased slightly by 0.04 percent compared to the same period last year.
Two-week long Eid holidays are believed to be a major factor in the drop in sales or distribution from manufacturers to dealers last month. “The decline in sales during Lebaran [Eid] is understandable,” Gaikindo first chairman Jongkie D. Sugiarto said.
Fewer business hours had a profound impact on sales, according to Jongkie. In addition, the government banned heavy vehicles from operating on main roads during Eid traffic season.
As a result, carmakers distributed their stocks long before the holidays, causing the low sales volume in that period.
“All activities were stopped. Marketing activities were not carried out optimally, so the decline is very normal in that month,” Jongkie said.
