TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - No wonder corruption thrives in Indonesia. Very little of the corruptors’ lives changes after they are convicted and sentenced to prison. They might be imprisoned, but they stay in ‘luxury cells’ and they are allowed to leave the premises for ‘medical reasons’. But thanks to Tempo’s investigative report, the authorities are finally waking up to this negligence and they say they are correcting the abuses in some of the correctional facilities.

Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly has promised to act against errant wardens and prison officials. “There will be zero tolerance,” exhorted Yasonna. We shall see. Meanwhile, why doesn’t the government freeze the ill-gotten assets and money of the corruptors, so they can’t buy their way out of their deserved punishment?
