TEMPO.CO, Kupang - The tidal flood occurred in Sikka District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) destroyed dozens of houses in the area. The flood was caused by bad weather that hit the region in the past two weeks.
The worst region that was affected by the natural disaster is Waipare which is located in Kangae District. Many residents that live in the coastal area have been evacuated to a safer location since the tidal wave at the region could reach 50 meters.
One of the houses struck by the tidal flood is owned by Mursadi. Parts of his house including the kitchen, living room, and bedroom were all destroyed by the tidal flood.
Amir, a local resident, stated that the tidal flood has struck the area for the past week. He and his family refused to evacuate with the others. “The tidal wave this time is pretty big. Honestly, I was scared and panicked for a moment. But I and my family will withstand it, we have no plan to evacuate,” he said.
The tidal flood has also struck seven other districts in the region, such as Talibura, Kewapante, Kangae, East Alok, Alok, West Alok, and Magepanda districts.
“Around 50 houses in these seven districts are under threat,” says Antonius Reynold da Cunha, the Head of Security and Social Protection Department of Sikka District Social Services.
Local social services have distributed aid in the form of rice, canned fish, cooking oil, and sleeping mats.
