FPI Spokesman Questioned by Bali Police over Alleged Defamation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bali Police question the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) spokesman, Munarman, over alleged defamation against Bali’s traditional security officers, locally known as pecalang. The allegation was based on a video uploaded to YouTube.
Investigators had earlier questioned other witnesses that include, among others, linguists, criminal expert witnesses, information and technology experts, sociologist and personnel of Jakarta-based media company.
Police had also quizzed plaintiff Zet Hasan who filed a report of alleged defamation committed by Munarman for accusing the pecalangs throwing objects at residential houses and blocking Muslims from performing the Friday prayer, as seen on a video footage during the FPI spokesman’s visit to Kompas office building in Jakarta, which was uploaded to YouTube on June 17 last year.
Munarman is charged under Law No. 11/2008 on Informatics and Electronic Transactions, which carries a five-year jail term.
