TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said that elite counterterrorism unit Special Detachment (Densus) 88 had questioned 17 Indonesians who were deported from Turkey on January 21, 2017.
“As of last night, they were still being interrogated by Densus 88. Some 17 Indonesians who are allegedly linked to international terrorist organization ISIS,” Boy said in his office in South Jakarta on Monday, January 23.
Boy said that the 17 Indonesians had planned to enter Syria through Turkey but were foiled by Turkish authorities who closely watch foreigners or tourists suspected to be involved in conflicts in Syria and Iraq. “After being arrested, they were interviewed and deported,” the police spokesman said.
Boy said that police launched an investigation into whether they planned to join ISIS or had other motives. He said that police will conduct a fair investigation because they had investigated a similar case where terror links could not be proven. “We will see in two to three weeks’ time.”
